Madotsuki playing a game.

Yume Nikki & Fangames

About Yume Nikki

Yume Nikki is a free-to-play surreal exploration game created by the mysterious Kikiyama. The game was first released on July 26, 2004 and continued to receive updates until October 1, 2007.

The title is translated as "Dream Diary" in English. The game follows a young girl, Madotsuki, through her various dreams. The main goal of the game is to collect various "effects", which change Madotsuki's appearance and give her various abilities. Some effects are required to access certain areas and events of the game. Once every effect is collected, the player can access the ending.

The game previously had no official English translation, and relied on fan-translations until February 10, 2012 when an official translation was released on Playism. This version was later released on Steam on January 9, 2018.

The game became somewhat of a cult classic and inspired fan-games such as .flow, Yume 2kki, Lcd Dem, Me, and Yume Graffiti, among others. The game also received a 3D rendition titled "YUMENIKKI -DREAM DIARY-", which was controversial due to not being very faithful to the original.
